MAAD @ Red Dot Museum
Went to MAAD @ Red Dot Museum on 2nd March. Got this few trinkets: Top left : BATDNA from Roomism , a nice chinese ideogram (water) from Amy Handmade Ceramics and a wooden dolphin necklace which was my birthday present from Lina, my good fren from secondary school.

Was really surprised to see handmade ceramics at MAAD. According to Amy the stall owner, the necklace feels like granite but is actually made from a special clay imported from USA. She makes cute ceramics based on rabbits too. What a lovely lady. I do wish I had her job, always thought working with clay would be very therapeutic. Nana, the owner of Roomism, was a delightful lady to talk to. Her illustrations (not shown here) are gorgeous and one could see she was brimming with ideas. Maad is a nice handicraft market to while away some time chatting to various creative people. Do check it out.

How (not) to Kill a Maidenhair Fern-

Left: Plant just transplanted from office environment with cool temperatures of 27 celsius and moderate shade and high humidity & water provided by fish pond just beside it. It was happy & flourishing.

Right: 5 months later, after plant withered within 1 month of being at the window with full hot sun 33-35 celsius & bad watering.

Current temperatures are 26-32 celsius, sunny (but trying to put it in shade using netting) & water & pebbles at bottom of tray to provide moisture. Plant is starting to throw out small fronds about 2mm long in response to shade & humidity.

Just added some pebbles to prevent evaporation from top of soil. Crossing fingers that in 1 week the fronds will start growing out.

Got these two tea strainers for my dad and mum, whose birthdays were only few days apart in January. The cake is for my dad, and the teapot, my mum. Really sweet looking. They cost $8 each.

NYT article – Handmade 2.0

Here’s the article: Handmade 2.0

Uh-uh. that’s what I thought, reading 2 pages into the article, talking about the crafts movement starting around 2004. This is 2008 (soon to be). While I don’t think the Crafts/DIY movement in the likes of Etsy , Ikea Hackers, part of Instructables and also which is driving demand at sites like Threadless; is about to self-destruct, somehow I feel in my bones this is part of a movement that will eventually taper and snuff out.

There’s countless examples: the Arts & Crafts Movement in early 20th century, the nostalgic movement in the 1950s and perhaps, more recently the 2000s, which has seen bohemia, retro threads and a keen interest in all things last century, so much it seems we haven’t moved much away from it.

However, the article states: “But the new wave of crafters infused uncool-sounding domestic skills like knitting and sewing with a postpunk attitude that revolved partly around mall-rejecting self-sufficiency.” citing instances of ‘ iPod Cocoons’ and embroidered shirts that said ‘will fuck for shoes’.

While I do feel that the movement will taper after a few years of gratifying interest in handmade crafts, furry little toys and pretty metal jewelry, Etsy’s Robert Kalin believes the appeal will outlast the faddish aspects. As quoted in the article- ‘In 25 years, he said, Etsy would be both worldwide and personal, a global-local marketplace, a Web version of the Athenian agora’.

I admit he makes a pertinent point when he says, ““When you get an item from Etsy, there’s this whole history behind it. There’s a person behind it.” There’s more in the article which I have not mentioned, i’ll leave it to you to deciper: Handmade 2.0

Google Calendar & Yahoo Go! for Pocket Pcs

(not exactly the newest news but anyway) Google Google Calendar has just come out with some great software, an online calendar you can update anywhere. Adding to that, here’s an easy way to update appointments on your pocket pc GMobileSync: which syncs your online google calendar to your pocket pc. Which is something that I have been looking to ever since I saw iCal online on my friend’s site. (dun Mac ppl have it good?)

Another thing I’m salivating over is this wonderful interface Yahoo Go for pocket pcs: flickr, surfing, and gps system are just some of the things you can look forward to. At last, something that looks really decent to surf on: Hooray!

Now you can look like a teddy bear salesman too.

Made a little trip out to Ikea with a couple of my secondary school friends (yes, I have friends from that long ago-:) and spotted this really cute exhibition where the clothes were made out of Ikea furnishings or fabric. Some very creative minds at work here, see if you can spot the Ikea..!

Part of the Lighting project I did in July, after getting permission from my boss to use the lights and the cameras. Lucky me! I did a basic lightbox setup with a 4×8 boards as infills and a translucent 4×4 at the back. Not very successful- I did try to make more of a backlight. Somehow the image once converted to jpg, has lost much of its color… hmm does anyone know why?

Currant the Bunny

My first sewing project in years, a toy bunny made of cotton and felt. It was quite easy for the most part, except the stitching of the mouth. That took me almost 1 hour..! This came from a desire to really get back to making crafts after years of neglect. I made Currant the bunny based on Hilary Lang’s template: check out her website.
